When starting a business, there are several stages that must be followed according to the General Corporation Code. These steps include the following:
Selecting the company name
Selecting a corporation type based on your business model; Limited Liability Companies (LLCs), Corporations, Sole Proprietorships, General Partnerships, and Limited Partnerships are the most popular options
Submitting the incorporation certificate
Choosing directors, creating company policies, designating a registered agent, and calling the first board meeting
Although Premier American Dispatch does not offer legal advice, we can assist you with all required paperwork and documentation to make the process smoother.
Steps for Starting Your Trucking Company
How to Get Title for a Trailer and Trailer Registration
Whether you buy or rent a trailer for your business, all trailers must be properly registered. Only then will the state allow them to operate on highways.
Title for a Trailer
The title process begins at the DMV, but to save time, you can often complete the forms online. Whether you purchased or leased the trailer, the seller or lessor should have completed the transfer of ownership into your name. This official transfer shows legal ownership. If you purchased a brand-new trailer from a dealer or manufacturer, a title application must be submitted.
Registering Your Trailer
To register your trailer, the following are typically required:
Evidence of ownership
A completed trailer registration application
Proof that all applicable taxes have been paid
Proof of insurance coverage
Cost Estimation for Trailer Title and Registration
Title Fee (no liens): $55
Annual Trailer Registration Fees (based on weight):
Up to 1,000 lbs: $15
1,001 – 2,000 lbs: $20
2,001 – 5,000 lbs: $40
Over 5,000 lbs: $40 plus an additional $18 per 1,000 lbs
Note: If you plan to operate across state lines, “apportioned registration” is required. This type of registration must be completed in your home state and allows interstate travel without needing separate registrations for each state. Fees are calculated based on the number of miles driven in each state.
Ins and Outs of the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return (HVUT)
In addition to standard business taxes, truck operators must file the annual Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return (Form 2290) with the IRS for any vehicle with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more operating on public highways.
Gross Vehicle Weight Includes:
The unloaded weight of the vehicle when fully equipped
The weight of any attached trailer or semi-trailer
The load-carrying capacity of the vehicle and trailer
Premier American Dispatch can assist with the paperwork and ensure your HVUT filing is submitted correctly and on time, helping you stay compliant with federal regulations.
